Self-Management of Chronic Conditions by Families and Children 0.5 CNE


Nurses lack knowledge regarding best practices for effective intervention to improve people's self-management of chronic conditions. The following video aims to narrow this practice gap by providing education about strategies for developing appropriate interventions to improve individuals’ self-management of their chronic conditions. 
 
 
Accreditation Statement: University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
 
Requirements for Successful Completion: To receive contact hours for this continuing education activity, the participant must complete the entire online module and complete and submit the evaluation form. Once the evaluation form has been submitted, a “Certificate of Successful Completion” will be awarded for 0.5 contact hours and will be available in your Learning Express account under "View/Print CE Credit".

Learning outcome: Registered nurses will report desire to change practice related to knowledge increase regarding empowering patients to use health technology to address chronic disease self-management. Focus will be on challenges specific to the aging population, youth, and underserved populations, exploring digital health research possibilities and limitations within the framework of ethical and legal boundaries.

Brief Bio : Sharon Horner, PhD, RN, FAAN, received her PhD in Nursing and her MSN in Parent-Child Nursing from the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Horner's research focuses on improving health of families with children. She has received approximately $3.7 million over 18 years in federal funding for her primary work with school-aged children with asthma and their families who live in rural areas. She recently completed a study funded by the National Institutes of Health, National Institute for Nursing Research and National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (10R01 NR007770) to test her intervention in a stratified randomized control trial. The focus of the intervention is to improve asthma management behaviors of parents and children; reduce asthma symptom frequency and duration, and lung inflammation. The study found significant improvements in children’s asthma-related quality of life, asthma self-management behaviors, skill in using a metered dose inhaler, and reductions in asthma severity, hospitalizations, and emergency department visits. Dr. Horner has been honored as recipient of the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists, 2014 Sue B. Davidson Service Award, the Southern Nursing Research Society 2013 Award for Research in Minority Health, and the Texas Rural Health Association, 2013 Researcher of the Year. She holds the Dolores V. Sands Chair in Nursing Research and is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. In 2015 she was elected to fill the sequence of President-elect (2015-2016), President (2016-2017), and Immediate Past President (2017-2018) of the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists.
